The Pollinctor - 1895

The Pollinctor

By James T. Bowyer
Richmond, Va.: J. W. Randolph & English, 1895.

Description:
Octavo, stitched pamphlet, 22 pp. A scarce Southern literary work by James T. Bowyer, author of The Witch of Jamestown. The title—Pollinctor, meaning “embalmer” in Latin—suggests the story’s morbid and allegorical tone, typical of the late 19th-century Southern Gothic style. Published by J.W. Randolph & English, one of Richmond’s most historically significant firms known for postbellum Southern literature and Confederate memorial publications.

Condition:
Original printed wrappers, partially disbound along spine with expected toning; pages clean and unmarked.

Significance:
This edition is extremely uncommon—no copies currently recorded in the trade and only a few known in institutional holdings (including the Library of Virginia and possibly Duke University). A fine example of post-Reconstruction Virginia publishing and regional fiction.
